2026 Forest River Salem 178ICE Buyer's Guide

2026 Forest River Salem 178ICE Buyer's Guide

What kind of trailer is this, and who is it for?

The 2026 Forest River Salem 178ICE is a single-axle travel trailer that sleeps five in 23.75 feet of overall length. That's a short trailer by bunkhouse standards, and the floorplan does something unusual to get there: front bedroom, rear bath, rear kitchen and rear living, with one slide to open up the middle. Two bunks and a queen bed anchor the sleeping arrangements in a trailer this size. It's a small travel trailer that doesn't give up the bunks, which is normally the first thing to go.

Standing outside, the proportions make sense right away. 7.5 feet wide, 10.33 feet tall, one axle under it. There's a full-size spare tire mounted, which is not a given on trailers this size and matters more than people think when you're an hour outside of anywhere on a single axle. The roof is a walk-on design with 3/8-inch decking and it's prepped for a ladder, so sealing the seams once a year is a job you can actually do yourself.

What can tow a 2026 Forest River Salem 178ICE?

Dry weight is 4,099 pounds and the GVWR is 5,580, with 480 pounds of hitch weight. Loaded to the top of its rating, you're asking a tow vehicle for somewhere in the neighborhood of 5,600 pounds, which puts a good number of half-ton trucks and the heavier mid-size SUVs in play. Check your own door jamb and owner's manual, because tow ratings vary wildly between trim levels of the same truck, but this is a lightweight travel trailer by design and not one that demands a three-quarter-ton to move.

The 1,481 pounds of cargo capacity is the number worth circling. That's the difference between the dry weight and the GVWR, and it's genuinely generous for a trailer this short. Water, propane, bikes, food, the dog, all of it comes out of that 1,481.

The tongue jack handles hitching, and on a trailer with this hitch weight you're not fighting it.

Where does everyone sleep?

The queen bed in the front bedroom is the main berth. It's a walk-around-free, use-the-space-you-have arrangement typical of a trailer at this length, and the closet storage alongside it is where the week's clothes live rather than staying in duffels on the floor.

Then there are the two bunks. This is the piece that makes the 178ICE work as a bunkhouse travel trailer: kids get their own place to be, with their own stuff, and they're not sleeping on a converted dinette every night. If you've got two kids, that's the whole sleeping arrangement solved without touching the furniture.

The booth dinette is where everybody eats and where the board games and laptops end up.

Good fit if you're a family of four or five who wants real bunks, a queen bed and a dedicated bath in a trailer under 24 feet that a half-ton can tow comfortably.

Look at something else if you need two full bathrooms, a second air conditioner for desert summers, or more than one slide to live in long term.

How long can we camp without hookups?

Fresh water is 39 gallons, with 30 gallons of grey and 30 of black. That's a weekend to four days for a family of four if you're disciplined with showers, and longer than that for a couple. The grey tank fills before the fresh empties in most real-world use, so quick showers and a dishpan buy you the extra day.

The Limited Edition Camp Ready Package is on this build, and the 13.5K BTU roof-mounted air conditioner replaces the smaller 8K side-mount unit, which is a meaningful upgrade in Utah in July. The 12V power awning stretches 15 feet, so your shade comes out at the touch of a button instead of a crank and a ladder.

Where does the gear go?

Pass through storage

Pass-through storage runs across the trailer, and it's the reason this floorplan works for people who camp with equipment rather than just clothes. Camp chairs, a generator, leveling blocks, hoses, the folding table, the stuff that has no home inside a 23.75-foot trailer. You load it from outside and you never have to drag it through the living space.

Inside, the closet in the bedroom plus the cabinetry around the kitchen handles the rest. With 1,481 pounds of cargo capacity you have the weight budget to actually fill those spaces, which is not true of every trailer in this class.

What's the kitchen like?

The rear kitchen is where the floorplan earns its keep. Because the galley sits at that end rather than squeezed along a wall mid-coach, you get counter space and a cook who isn't blocking the aisle. The refrigerator is a 10 cubic foot unit, which is roughly double what a trailer this size usually carries, and it changes how you shop. You can buy groceries for a week instead of resupplying every other day.

Shower

Fall camping in Utah means 30-degree mornings in September at elevation, and a hard-sided trailer with a real bed and a real bathroom is a different experience than a tent or a pop-up. The rear bath has an enclosed shower, so nobody's walking to a bathhouse in the dark. Close the door, run the furnace, and the kids stay in the bunks instead of in your bed.

The single slide adds floor space when you're parked without adding the complication of multiple slide mechanisms to maintain. One slide, one seal to check.

If you've been looking at new travel trailer options and keep running into the tradeoff between length and sleeping capacity, this is one of the few floorplans that refuses the tradeoff. Among travel trailers for sale in Utah, short bunkhouses with a rear bath and a queen up front are a narrow category.
