Storage and setup outside the 2026 Forest River Shasta Phoenix 27BAR

Loading day is where this floorplan quietly wins, because the numbers leave you room to actually pack.

Dry weight is 8,503 pounds against an 11,000-pound GVWR, which leaves 2,497 pounds of cargo capacity. That's real margin for a family's worth of chairs, tools, firewood, food and water, not a figure you burn through with two duffel bags. It rides on two axles with ST225/75R15 tires, measures 33 feet 7 inches long, 8 feet wide and 12 feet tall. Write that height down before you back it into a storage unit or under a carport.

Pass-through storage runs across the trailer, and this is the compartment that decides whether a rig works for you. Long items go in from either side and come out the other, so the camp table or the folding ramps don't have to live in the truck bed. It's the first place most shoppers stick their head when they walk one of these.

Hitch weight is 1,570 pounds, which is what lands in your truck bed and what you'll check against your payload sticker. Setup is straightforward: the hitch jack lifts and levels the pin end, and the 16-foot awning covers most of the door side for shade.

The outdoor kitchen

Cooking outside keeps the heat, the smoke and the smell of bacon out of the living space, and it pulls everyone into the shade instead of the aisle.

The outdoor kitchen is built into the sidewall, so you're serving from the awning side with the door right there. It's the feature that makes a long weekend feel bigger than the floor square footage, especially with six people aboard. Kids eat outside, the cook stays outside, and nobody tracks through the coach.

Inside the kitchen

The interior kitchen is laid out as the real cooking space, with counter you can work on and a refrigerator sized for a week away rather than an overnight.

Two slide-outs do the heavy lifting here. With them out, you get aisle width in the kitchen instead of shuffling sideways past the dinette, and that matters more than any single spec when two adults are both trying to get to the sink. Storage is distributed in cabinets and drawers rather than one deep hole.

Fresh water capacity is 40 gallons, with 33 gallons of grey and 33 of black, so a dry camp comes down to how disciplined you are at the sink.

Living and dining in a rear living room layout

This is a rear living room floorplan, so the seating and dining sit together in the widest, most open part of the coach instead of being squeezed between the bedroom and the galley.

The dinette gives you a table for meals, a work surface for laptops and cards, and another place for someone to sleep when the count gets to six. Because the living area is at one end and the sleeping space is at the other, somebody can stay up without standing over the bed.

Climate control is a 60,000 BTU furnace and 13,500 BTU of air conditioning, which is a serious furnace for shoulder-season trips into the Uintas or an October stay in Moab. A 200-watt solar panel with a battery and charge controller is available if you want to keep the batteries topped and the 12-volt side honest when you're parked without hookups. A second air conditioner with a heat pump is available if you spend your summers somewhere hot.

The monitor panel keeps the tank levels and switches in one place, and interior and exterior convenience packages are available if you want the extra fit-and-finish items added. Linen decor is also available, along with roadside assistance.

Bedroom

The bedroom is a separate room with a door, which is the whole reason people step up from a bunkhouse trailer to a fifth wheel.

You get standing room beside the bed, which sounds obvious until you've dressed in a trailer that doesn't have it. The slide-out construction is what buys that floor space, and it's the difference between a bedroom and a mattress in a box.

Closet storage is built in, so clothes hang for a two-week trip instead of living in the bags you brought them in. Look at where your own gear would go while you're standing in it. That's the test.

Bath

The bath is sized to be used daily by a family rather than treated as an emergency option.

There's a shower, a sink with counter space to set things down, and the room to turn around while you do it. With 33 gallons of grey and 33 of black, showers aboard are practical for several days, and the 40-gallon fresh tank sets the real limit.

Among the new fifth wheel inventory on our lot, this is the layout we point families toward when they want a rear living room and an outdoor kitchen without stretching past 34 feet. If you've been looking at a Forest River fifth wheel and weighing it against the half-tons and three-quarter-tons in your driveway, the 1,570-pound hitch weight and 11,000-pound GVWR are the two numbers to take home with you.

Frequently asked questions

What is hitch weight on a fifth wheel, and what is it on this one?

Hitch weight (pin weight) is the portion of the trailer's weight that rests on the hitch in your truck bed. On this floorplan it's 1,570 pounds, and that figure has to fit inside your truck's payload rating along with passengers and anything in the bed.

What truck do I need to tow it?

Start with the loaded weight, not the dry weight. Fully loaded to its 11,000-pound GVWR with 1,570 pounds on the pin, it's a three-quarter-ton conversation for most buyers, and your truck's door-jamb payload sticker gives you the real answer.

How many people does it sleep?

Six. The bedroom and the dinette carry that count, with the two slide-outs opening up the floor so six people aren't standing on each other.

Can I camp without hookups?

Yes, within reason. A 200-watt solar panel with a battery and charge controller is available, and you've got 40 gallons of fresh water and 33 gallons each of grey and black, so your water tanks usually run out before your power does.

How tall is it for storage?

Exterior height is 12 feet and it's 8 feet wide, 33 feet 7 inches long. Measure your gate and your garage door before you commit to a storage spot.
