2026 Forest River Takoda 399TH Buyer's Guide

What can tow a 2026 Forest River Takoda 399TH?

That's the first question almost everyone asks standing in the parking lot, so we start there. This toy hauler runs 47 feet long, 8.5 feet wide and 13.33 feet tall, with a dry weight of 17,389 lbs and a GVWR of 21,000 lbs. Hitch weight is 3,265 lbs, which is the number your truck's payload has to absorb before you load a single cooler. Underneath are two 7,000 lb axles on heavy-duty 4,000 lb springs, 17.5-inch tires and MORryde CRE 3000 suspension with heavy-duty shackles and a wet bolt kit. The chassis is a 102-inch wide-body with a drop-frame front storage compartment, and the front cap is fully painted aerodynamic fiberglass. Sidewalls, slide-out end walls and roofs are NTXT laminated.
Note the 13.33-foot height before you book anything with a covered entrance, and measure your site length against 47 feet. Three slides mean you also want to think about width once you're parked, not just on the road.
Good fit if you need sleeping room for nine, a garage and a 3,611 lb cargo capacity, and you have a tow vehicle set up for a 3,265 lb hitch weight.
Look at something else if your usual campgrounds cap sites below 47 feet or your truck can't carry that hitch weight with passengers and gear aboard.

Where does everyone sleep?

Nine people, and the sleeping is spread out rather than stacked into one room. There's a king bed, a queen, a loft and a bunk, so a family traveling with another couple or a crew of riders isn't negotiating over who gets the real mattress. The bedroom has a 32-inch LED smart TV, and the bedroom A/C unit includes a heat pump.

The bunk is the piece that makes this a bunkhouse toy hauler rather than a couples rig with a garage bolted on. Kids claim it in about four seconds.
Where does all the gear go?

Cargo capacity is 3,611 lbs, and the garage is a real one, wired with its own 32-inch LED smart TV so whoever's sleeping or hanging out back there has something to watch. Onboard fuel capacity is 60 gallons.

The drop-frame front storage compartment gives you a pass-through bay for chairs, hoses, tools and the bins that never make it inside.

Interior storage holds up its end too, with hanging space and cabinetry built in around the living areas.
Can you actually cook in this thing?

Yes, and it's one of the stronger parts of the walk-around. The refrigerator is a 16 cu ft 12V French door unit with a double drawer freezer, which is household-sized.

The cooktop has four burners, there's convection cooking, and the countertops are solid surface with flip-up extensions so you can add workspace when three people are in the kitchen at once. Cabinet doors are soft-close hardwood raised panel with magnetic catches, which is a small detail you'll notice every day. Hot water comes from a 60,000 BTU on-demand tankless water heater, so showers don't run out partway through.

There's also an outdoor kitchen, which is where most of the breakfast cooking ends up happening anyway.
How long can we camp without hookups?

An 880 watt solar system is standard, feeding the 12V systems including that refrigerator. Fresh water is 150 gallons, grey is 88 and black is 44, and you carry two 30 lb LP tanks.
The grey tank fills first in most families, so plan around 88 gallons and you'll be fine. Electrical service is 50 amp when you do plug in, which you'll want for the high-efficiency triple A/C system: three 15,000 BTU units for 45,000 BTU total.
How does it handle cold nights?

A 40,000 BTU high-capacity furnace does the heavy lifting. The underbelly and dump valves are heated and enclosed with circulating heat, and there are 12V heat pads on the holding tanks. Insulation is formaldehyde-free fiberglass in the roof, front cap and main floor. The bedroom A/C includes a heat pump, which takes the chill off a fall morning without running propane, and there's a 5,100 BTU electric fireplace in the living space for the same reason.
For Utah shoulder-season trips, Mirror Lake in September or a late-season weekend in the San Rafael Swell, that package matters more than almost anything else on the sheet.
What's setup like at the site?

A 6-point hydraulic automatic leveling system handles the hard part. You park, you press, you're level.

Backing in is easier with the Furrion Vision S 3-camera system. Outside, there are three awnings: an 8-footer, a 10-foot 9-inch, and a 16-foot adjustable power awning with dimmable LED lights on the camp side. That's a lot of covered ground when the afternoon sun hits.
What about the bathroom and laundry?

The shower measures 30 by 42 inches, a standard shower you can actually turn around in, and it's fed by that tankless water heater.
A washer and dryer are available if you want laundry onboard for longer trips.

A 50-inch LED smart TV anchors the living area, and rear entertainment is part of the layout, so the garage crowd and the living room crowd aren't fighting over one screen.
