2027 Forest River R-POD 192 Specs & Towing

2027 Forest River R-POD 192 Specs & Towing

A single-axle trailer that most half-tons already handle: the 2027 Forest River R-POD 192

Start at the tongue, because that's where most of the decision gets made. Dry weight is 3,649 pounds. GVWR is 4,785. Cargo capacity is 1,136 pounds, which is the real number, because it's the gap between empty and legally loaded, and it's where your water, your food, your firewood and your gear live. Hitch weight is 385 pounds dry. Overall length is 22.17 feet, exterior width is 8 feet, and height is 10.33 feet.

What that means in practice: this is a one-axle trailer under 5,000 pounds loaded, and a lot of midsize SUVs and most half-ton trucks are rated well past it. Do not take my word for it. Open your door jamb sticker and your owner's manual, find your tow rating and your payload, then subtract that 385-pound tongue weight plus passengers and whatever's in the bed. Payload is what runs out first on half-tons, not tow rating. A weight-distributing hitch is still worth having at 22 feet, and the brochure spec on this line includes a tire pressure monitoring system, which matters more on a single axle than it does on a tandem. Lose a tire on one axle and you're riding on nothing.

Backing and parking are easy at this length. There's a rear accessory hitch for a bike rack or cargo tray, and it gives you a place to put the stuff you don't want inside.

Water, power and how long you can stay out

Fresh water is 30 gallons. Grey is 30 and black is 30, which is the arrangement you want, because your grey tank fills faster than your black one on most trips and matched tanks keep you from dumping early just to shower. Thirty gallons of fresh on two people doing dishes and quick showers is a few days. The on-demand tankless water heater helps here, because you're not heating and reheating a stored tank, and you won't run out of hot water mid-shower (you'll run out of fresh water instead, which is a tank gauge problem, not a plumbing one).

The three numbers to write down are 4,785 pounds GVWR, 1,136 pounds cargo capacity and 385 pounds hitch weight. The GVWR tells you whether your vehicle qualifies at all, the cargo number tells you how much camping gear and water you can actually carry before you're over, and the hitch weight tells you how much of your truck's payload this trailer eats before you've put a single person in a seat.

Everything else on the sheet is comfort. Those three are the ones that decide whether you can tow it.

Power off-grid starts with the large roof-mounted solar panel and its 30-amp controller, with inverter prep already run. That means the charging side is handled from the factory and the wiring path for an inverter is in place if you want to add one. Air conditioning is 15,000 BTU, which is a lot of cooling for a trailer this size, and in a Utah July you'll be glad it's oversized rather than right-sized. The enclosed underbelly has forced heat, so the tanks and lines are protected when you're chasing shoulder-season weather up a canyon.

The walls are AZDEL composite panels, polypropylene and fiberglass. The practical upside is that they don't absorb water and they insulate better, which is part of why a small travel trailer like this one holds temperature the way it does.

Sleeping four and where the gear goes

Living dinette

This floorplan sleeps four, and the listing on this one specifies a king bed. That's unusual in a 22-foot trailer, and it's the single feature most couples react to on the walk-through. The dinette handles the other two sleepers and doubles as your dining and laptop space.

Storage is better than the footprint suggests. There's pass-through storage in the front for chairs, hoses and the leveling blocks, and a closet inside for hanging clothes so you're not living out of duffel bags for a week.

Awning

The galley gets a large refrigerator and a convection microwave, so you've got real oven function without a separate oven taking up floor space. An outdoor kitchen is confirmed on this unit, which is the feature that keeps the cooking smell and the heat outside where the awning is. The awning itself is 12 feet.

A central vacuum system is standard on the line, which sounds like a gimmick until you've camped in dirt for four days. The bath has a four-speed high powered fan, and the upgraded shower enclosure is fitted on select models in the line.

Smaller things that add up: USB-C ports inside and outside, motion lighting inside and out so you're not fumbling for a switch at 2 a.m., premium window treatments, and an acrylic front window with a night shade and a bug shield. Platform entry steps appear on select models in the line. This one is also available with the R-POD Camp-Ready Package, the Hood River Edition and the Moon Dust interior color if you want to spec one from the factory.

If you've been looking at a new travel trailer and keeping an eye on payload, this is the lightweight travel trailer conversation worth having in person. Among the Forest River travel trailers and other travel trailers for sale in Utah on our lot, this one has the widest gap between what it weighs and what it gives you.

Frequently asked questions

What truck do I need to tow it?

Check your own vehicle's numbers rather than going by class. You need a tow rating above 4,785 pounds GVWR and enough remaining payload to carry 385 pounds of tongue weight plus your passengers and cargo.

How much does it weigh?

Dry weight is 3,649 pounds and GVWR is 4,785 pounds, with 1,136 pounds of cargo capacity between them.

Does it have a slide-out?

No. This is a no-slide floorplan at 22.17 feet, which keeps the weight down and means nothing mechanical to fail at a campsite.

Can I camp without hookups?

Yes. You've got 30 gallons of fresh water, 30 grey and 30 black, plus a roof-mounted solar panel with a 30-amp controller and inverter prep, and a heated enclosed underbelly for cold nights.

Is there outside cooking?

Yes, this one has an outdoor kitchen, and there's a 12-foot awning over it.
